What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?By Laura Rhodes-Levin, LMFT — Founder, The Missing Peace Center; ADAA Integrative
Health Co-ChairIf weekly therapy isn’t keeping up with what you’re facing, but stepping away fromyour life for inpatient treatment feels like too much, there’s a level of care inbetween. It’s called an Intensive Outpatient Program — an IOP — and for many peoplewith anxiety, depression, trauma, or OCD, it’s exactly the right amount of support.
The short version
An IOP is a structured treatment program you attend several times a week whilecontinuing to live at home, work, or go to school. It’s more support than a weeklytherapy session, and less disruptive than checking into a facility. At The MissingPeace Center, our IOP meets three days a week, three hours a day — nine hours offocused care each week, in person, in Agoura Hills.
What actually happens in an IOP
An IOP combines a few kinds of support in one program:• Group sessions, where you learn skills and connect with others who understand.
• Individual therapy, focused on what’s driving your symptoms.
• Skills training you can use in real life — for calming your nervous system, managing difficult thoughts, and handling stress.
At our center, that clinical work is paired with integrative, nervous-systemapproaches like neurofeedback and breathwork, so you’re treating both the mind andthe body’s role in how you feel.
Who an IOP is forAn IOP tends to be the right fit when:
• Weekly therapy isn’t enough to keep symptoms manageable.
• Anxiety, depression, trauma, or OCD is interfering with work, school, sleep, or relationships.
• You’re stepping down from a hospital or residential program and need continued structure.
• You want meaningful progress without putting the rest of your life on hold.
We work with adolescents, young adults, and adults.
How long does it last?
It varies by person, but IOPs are time-limited by design — typically several weeks, with the goal of building tools that last and then stepping back down to weeklycare. We coordinate with your outside therapist when you have one, so there’s asmooth handoff.
Is it covered by insurance?
Often, yes. We’re in-network with Cigna, Aetna, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare, and weaccept most PPO plans. The simplest next step is to let us verify your specificbenefits — it’s free and confidential, with no obligation.
