Signs You Need More Than Weekly Therapy

5 Signs You (or Your Teen) May Need More Than Weekly Therapy
By Laura Rhodes-Levin, LMFT — Founder, The Missing Peace Center
Weekly therapy helps a lot of people a lot of the time. But sometimes it isn’tenough — and it can be hard to know when that’s the case, especially when you’rewatching someone you love struggle. Here are five signs that a higher level of care, like an Intensive Outpatient Program, might be worth considering.

1. The week between sessions feels too longIf you find yourself just trying to survive until the next appointment — or yourteen falls apart in the days between sessions — that gap is telling you something.More frequent, structured support can steady things.

2. Symptoms are getting worse, not betterAnxiety that’s spreading into more of your life. Depression that’s deepening.Panic attacks becoming more frequent. Intrusive thoughts taking more of the day. When the trend line is heading the wrong way despite weekly therapy, it may be time to step up the level of care.

3. Daily life is slippingMissing work or school. Falling behind on responsibilities. Pulling away fromfriends and family. Not sleeping. When symptoms start costing you the things thatmatter — that’s a signal, not a personal failing.

4. You’re “functioning,” but barelyThis one is easy to miss, especially in high-achievers and teens who look fine onthe outside. You’re getting through the day, but it’s taking everything you have, and there’s nothing left over. Quietly white-knuckling through life is a reason toget more support, not less.

5. You’ve tried, and you’re still stuckYou’ve done the work. You’ve shown up to therapy. And you still feel stuck. That’snot a reason for shame — it often just means you need a different intensity ofsupport to get traction.

If several of these sound familiarIt doesn’t necessarily mean crisis, and it doesn’t necessarily mean inpatient. Oftenit means an IOP — more support than weekly therapy, without putting life on hold. AtThe Missing Peace Center, our in-person program serves adolescents, young adults, and adults, and works around school and work.

For parents: if you’re seeing these signs in your teen, trust that instinct. Reachingout for an assessment doesn’t commit you to anything — it just gets you answers.
